LESSON TWO -- KNOWING CHRIST

*** What steps have you taken to deepen your relationship with Christ?

READ -- Romans chapter 2 (focusing on verses 1 to 16)

1.  Why did Paul advise the Romans to avoid judging each other?

2.  Why do people tend to take God's kindness lightly?

3.  What guidelines will God use to reward or punish people?

4.  If hearing the law does not make people right with God, then what does?

5.  How can we tell right from wrong?

Answer in the comments section below.

QUESTION FROM JORDAN

Is there a difference between the soul and the spirit?  He read somewhere about people having a trinity -- body, soul and spirit.

Wrapping Up lesson ONE -- RIGHT WITH GOD

Hello M Family!

On Sunday we gathered at the D's and went through the reading and questions I had sent all the teens this past week.  It was great to get the younger generation participating more and hear their thoughts.  I shared the answers that Johanna and Nicole had sent to me, so both of you were with us in spirit.  :o)  Here are some final thoughts and notes I made on Sunday during our discussions:

- how does God reveal himself to people? -- Jordan changed his answer to, "through His people."  Lori shared that God has revealed Himself to her through events, things she has read, answers to prayer, etc.  We also discussed how it is important to be seeking God.

how have some people provoked God to anger?  --  Paul summed it up by saying people knowingly sinned, they knew better and chose to sin anyway.

God's wrath directed at...???  -- verse 21 and 28;  God loves His creation, He hates sin.

-   "Why is the truth of the gospel hidden from some people?
     -  If we don't seek the truth, we won't see it.
     -  As a person hardens their heart, they choose to hide from God and that is why the the truth is hidden... a person chooses to hide from it.

-  Paul questioned the wording of this next question - "What happens when God lets people go their own way?"  When it is worded this way, it makes it sound like God made them choose the wrong path.  Paul offered that it should be worded this way - "What happens when people choose their own way (instead of God's way)?
     -  Josh's answer - "CRITICAL FAIL!!!"

-  What is sin? Josh answered, "not fulfilling what is right with God."

-  "How would describe righteousness to a new believer?" -- Being right with God, believing on One He has sent.  I added we might define what it means to believe.  A person can believe there is a God or that Christ existed but this is not the belief we would be talking about here.  Belief would mean trust... putting your life and your choices in His hands, following His ways.

-   How do we get right with God and why is it important?  (Wes asked this question at the end and we never did discuss/answer it.)  Any thoughts?  I would would offer that we don't get right with God, God makes us right with Him.  Agree?

-  "So if people can know God through His creation and He will teach us, why do we need missionaries/evangelists/etc?"
     -  Jordan answered, "because we are too stupid to catch on."
     -  someone answered, "to serve."  For example missionaries that go and build a school.
     -  We discussed how quite often people need help working through who God is and maybe more importantly, who God isn't.  So many of us have wrong ideas about who God is or what He does.  So our job as Christ's body is to walk with people on their journey to know God and help with the renewing of their mind (there is a bible verse that talks about renewing the mind, but I don't have the reference for it).  We need to show people God's love, model it for them.  (
Go into all the world and preach the gospel, and, if necessary, use words.)

NEXT -- I will send out the lesson 2, KNOWING CHRIST.

FEAR VS FAITH

Fear knocked at the door. Faith answered and no one was there.

-What does this mean to you?

LAST PORTION OF LESSON ONE

1.  Why is it important to establish a right relationship with God?

More passages on RIGHTEOUSNESS

1 Samuel 26:23

1 Kings 10:9

Habakkuk 2:4

Zephaniah 2:3

Malachi 4:2

Romans 8:10

Galatians 3:11

2 Timothy 3:16

MISSIONARIES?

FOR EVERYONE TO ANSWER:  Can you think of any other verses where it talks about how people will know God and what he requires from us?  Do people have to be introduced to Him?

Jeremiah 24:7 - "I will give them a heart to know me, that I am the Lord.  They will be my people, and I will be their God, for they will return to me with all their heart."

Hebrews 8:11 - " No longer will will a man teach his neighbor, or a man his brother, saying 'know the Lord,' because they will all know me, from the least of them to the greatest."

Jeremiah 31:33 - "I will put my law in their minds and write it on their hearts."

John 6:45 - "It is written in the prophets: 'They will all be taught by God.' Everyone who listens to the Father and learns from him comes to me."

Romans 1:20 - "For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities - his eternal power and divine nature - have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse."

FOOD FOR THOUGHT:  So if people can know God through creation and God will teach us... why do we need missionaries/evangelists/etc?  Any ideas???

PART TWO OF LESSON ONE

A MESSAGE FROM BILLY GRAHAM:
What does it mean to be righteous?...
Righteousness has nothing to do with good works, though good works are a byproduct of being righteous.  Jesus spoke of God as the only one who is truly good.  The word "GOOD" is a synonym for righteous, so it follows that to be righteous is to be like God.  But how can anyone be like God, who is holy and perfect?
...Righteousness, meaning to be right or just, begins with believing in God.  It sounds so simple, but how many times do we disbelieve God?  God's formulas are so simple that we ignore them because we think there must be more to it than that.
All sin is rooted in unbelief.  All righteousness is rooted in belief.  Believe God for all His promises and He will count it unto you as righteousness.  Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, God's ultimate standard and incarnation of righteousness, and be saved.  Believe in Jesus Christ to deliver you in your day of trouble and learn what the righteousness of Christ can do in and through you.

1.  How would you describe righteousness to a new believer?

2.  Based on this message from Billy Graham, explain what is required to be right with God.

3.  Have you seen the righteousness of Christ transform a person's life?  If yes, please share the story.

Lesson One -- RIGHT WITH GOD

READ Romans 1:16 to 32

1.  How does God reveal himself to people?
JORDAN - He reveals himself through his gospel.
JOHANNA- Through the gospel and through creation
DEANNA- Depends on the person.
NICOLE- He reveals himself through faith.

FOR EVERYONE TO ANSWER:  What are some ways God has revealed Himself to you personally?  When do you feel closest to God?  What are some ways you connect with Him?

JORDAN -- what is the gospel?  What does gospel mean?

NICOLE -- What is faith?  How would you define it?

2.  How have some people provoked God to anger?
JORDAN - By covering his truths with their wickedness.
JOHANNA- They suppress the truth with their unrighteousness
DEANNA- Like any child, they break rules, they disobey, they rebel.
NICOLE- By doing things that are ungodly

JOHANNA -- what is righteousness?
FOR EVERYONE TO ANSWER:  Is God's wrath and anger directed at people (individuals)?  Or is it directed at something else?

3.  Why is the truth of the gospel hidden from some people?
JORDAN - It's not God has made what is to be known about him plain to see.
JOHANNA-  They became futile in their thinking
DEANNA- Because they choose not to see it, it's never hidden, god doesn't hide.
NICOLE-  I don't have an answer for that :-/

FOR EVERYONE TO ANSWER:  Can you think of any other verses where it talks about how people will know God and what he requires from us?  Do people have to be introduced to Him?

4.  What happens when God lets people go their own way?
JORDAN - They exchanged God's truth for their own lies.
JOHANNA- They get worse and worse and encourage others to do what they are doing
DEANNA- They sin mostly, but everyone sins, everyone has free will.
NICOLE- People sin, and enjoy it

DEANNA -- How would you define sin?  Why is freewill important?

5.  How can we find freedom from the bondage of sin?
JORDAN - Through our faith in Jesus Christ.
JOHANNA- Faith. And letting God be God with no competition
DEANNA- Follow your heart, listen to what he says, be filled with grace and faith and forgiveness...
NICOLE- By turning to God and asking forgiveness :)

note from the book:  God reveals himself to people in many ways.  The revelation of God through creation is called GENERAL REVELATION (Psalm 19:1; Acts 14:17; Romans 1:20).  God also reveals himself through the Bible (Psalm 19:8; Romans 1:16; John 5:13); the Holy Spirit (John 14:26; 1 Corinthians 2:13); and the incarnation of Christ (John 12:49 and 14:10).  This is called special revelation.

What does incarnation mean?

Romans Bible Study -- Feb 19 2012

Dear Josh, Jordan, Johanna, Deanna and Nicole,

I have felt led to start a little something for you young adults to participate in.  I scanned my book shelf today looking for inspiration and two books jumped out at me.  I looked over both of them but the book about Romans was the one that stood out to me.  I was looking for something that all of you could participate in (kind of like what Susan had for you a few months back) even though there is an ocean separating us.

Each week I will send out an email with what portion of Romans to read and some questions to think over and respond to.  The goal is to have all of you discuss it with each other via email, so please remember to hit REPLY ALL when you answer the questions.  Please answer within a couple of days of the questions being sent to you.

The book I will be referencing is called "Life Lessons with Max Lucado - Book of Romans".   Please feel free to discuss what you are reading with your parents as well, if you want to.  Also, if you have a friend who might like to join in, let me know and I will add them to the mailing list.

Tip:  Try reading each portion of Romans from more than one version of Scripture.  Bible Gateway is a great website to reference different versions.  (http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/)
